There is some controversy as to exactly when Fannie was born:

  • she is listed as being 2 years of age in the 1885 Iowa census and 12 in the 1895 Iowa census, indicating she was born in 1882 or 1883
  • she is listed as having been born in September 1882 in the 1900 Federal census
  • she is listed as being 21 years of age in the 1905 Iowa census, indicating she was born in 1883 or 1884
  • she is listed as being 22 years of age on her September 1907 marriage record, indicating she was born in 1884 or 1885
  • she is listed as being 24 years of age in the 1910 Federal census and 34 in the 1920 Federal census, indicating she was born in 1885 or 1886
  • a death notice lists her birth date as May 13, 1885
  • her gravestone lists year of birth as 1886
  • her Missouri death certificate list her birth date as October 6, 1885

It's fairly obvious that based on the early censuses she was most likely born in 1882 and that over the course of her adulthood she "fudged" her age more and more.  I had for a long time attributed a date of May 13 based on the death notice, but upon locating the death certificate, now believe the October 6 date to be more likely.

I visited her grave on the 100th anniversary of her death, which was when I obtained the GPS coordinates.  That day was an overcast, but unseasonably warm 60º, which was great for the hour and a half drive in the middle of winter.  I'm really glad it worked out.
